A night of two halves for us yesterday, as Southgate had very little closing spirit despite being close enough in the Will Rogers Stakes, with Caney’s Ghost and Great Faces proving too strong, and perhaps too progressive for the favourite and our selection, who was a tad disappointing and could prove hard to place.

Hoboken was a clear winner of the maiden claimer that followed, proving too good for his opponents, and he might have a chance of doing something in better company given the style of his success.

Tonight there’s racing from not only Will Rogers Downs but also Tampa Bay to boot, and at Tampa Bay we might have the best bet of the night. There’s an element of chance taken on Blame The Cake – his last outing was at Saratoga over six furlongs last year – but if he returns even close to that form then he’ll take all the beating as favourite. That maiden special weight has seen the winner go onto compete in graded contests, the second compete in races ranging from $25,000 to $37,000, and the third win three times at Aqueduct in maiden, allowance option and stakes company.

The extra furlong might be a slight question mark but there’s no doubting this is a drop in class for him and it’s worth taking the risk he’s ready to roll this evening.
