STAR PREVIEW Weds: Tottenham v Chelsea

Dreams of a Premier League title have disappeared for Chelsea, but Thomas Tuchel’s men have plenty to play for this season and they can book their place in the Carabao Cup final with victory over Tottenham.

With a home tie against non-Premier League opposition to come in the FA Cup, and all to play for as they defend their European title there’s every chance of silverware especially as they have one foot in the final after last week’s 2-0 victory in the first leg.

Chelsea played a strong side and were rewarded with a dominant showing against a very disappointing Tottenham side. They won the shot count 19-5, the shots on target count 6-2, and the corner count 5-1 without really moving out of second gear, and only excellent saves from Hugo Lloris to deny Romelu Lukaku, Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner prevented the contest from being well and truly over.

Spurs were most disappointing last week considering the improvement made since Antonio Conte took over, and there were worrying signs regarding squad depth when they laboured to a 3-1 victory over Morecambe in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Conte made eight changes – presumably to target this fixture – but Dele Alli, Bryan Gil, Pierluigi Gollini, Tanguy Ndombele, and especially the hapless Japhet Tanganga were all bitter disappointments and eventually it was left to Lucas Moura and Harry Kane to come on and prevent an embarrassment.

We can expect Spurs to return to a full-strength side but Lucas Moura and Harry Kane made no impact on the game last week whilst they’re now shorn of Son Heung-min due to a leg injury which adds to their issues.

Spurs ought to show more resistance at home but there’s a gulf in the quality available to Thomas Tuchel compared to Antonio Conte and Chelsea are a fair price at 6/4 to make it a double on their way to Wembley.
