STAR PREVIEW: West Ham v Everton

Following a nine-point deduction by the EFL, Birmingham City are facing the grim spectre of a relegation battle and this is not an ideal time to be travelling to promotion chasing West Brom.

Sanctioning the club is something that had been in the air for a while but when the EFL claimed had the club incurred losses of nearly £48.8m between 2015 and 2018 – almost £10m more than the accepted adjusted losses of £39m over a three-year period – and hit them with the sanction, it still would have come as a shock to Garry Monk and his men too. Who dropped from 13th to 18th.

Just over a month ago Birmingham were eyeing a playoff push, but since then they’ve lost four in a row and are now five points off the drop zone.

West Brom’s decision to sack Darren Moore off the back of three games without a win was a harsh one, but caretaker manager James Shan has made a strong start to life at the helm, with back to back wins at home to Swansea (3-0) and away to Brentford (1-0).

They had to ride their luck a bit when winning at Brentford but the return to the fold of – James Morrison and Chris Brunt gives him the sort of quality that sees the Baggies in fourth and with Jay Rodriguez and Dwight Gayle upfront they will always have an attacking threat and at home they’ve been one of the best sides in the division. They can keep their foot on the pedal.
