THE GREYHOUND WEEK BLOG: Julie Collier with all the latest news from the world of greyhound racing and the build-up to this weekend’s action ….

➡️ The Irish Derby kicked off at Shelbourne last Friday and Saturday nights. Perhaps one of the most eye catching performances was Great Eastern beating one of the shortest ante post dogs, Ballymac Cooper. The Martin Lanney trained dog clocked 29.62sec and 17.23 to the third bend. The sponsors, Boylesports have seen plenty of money for him but he is still a 100/1 chance with Star Sports. ➡️ At Star, there has been money for heat winner Lenson Bocko, maybe no surprise as he is English owned. He’s 14/1. We are also top price for Wolfe who will be odds on to win his second round heat after a ‘best of first round’ 29.22sec performance. He is a serious animal and currently 9/1. ➡️ Star Sports Derby finalist and favourite Magical Bale won his first round race in 29.62sec beating kennel companion Laughil Josh. Bale is in great hands of course now back over where he was born with Patrick Guilfoyle and he’s enjoying spending some quality time with his mummy, Sizzling Sarah (see picture above and video below). ➡️ This time last year, a very young Jaytee Taylor (pictured) got everyone’s attention when he clocked a scintillating 29.46sec in the first round winning by eight lengths and eventually making it to the final as a raw September 2016 two year old. He was well fancied by his kennel for the Star Sports Derby and whilst he made the semi-finals, I’m not sure he really got to grips with trap 6 at Nottingham. That said, he did beat his kennel mate and eventual Derby champion Priceless Blake along the way. Taylor has got his 2019 Irish Derby campaign off to a sweet start beating last years winner, Ballyanne Sim by a head in 29.72sec coming from off the pace as he always done. Now could well be his time and he will certainly come on for that run. He is still 14/1 with Star Sports. LATEST STARSPORTS.BET GREYHOUND MARKETS

➡️ Tricky Dumbo is safely through to the next round after he finished third in his Irish Derby heat. The only uk-trained raider found trouble in running but trainer Robert Holt is expecting better this weekend. Fingers crossed. LATEST STARSPORTS.BET GREYHOUND MARKETS

➡️ It was a big night at Monmore on Saturday and the two category one finals didn’t disappoint. Sheldan won the Monmore Summer stayers in impressive fashion. Kevin Boon’s bitch led from the red only to be overtaken by Sparta Master. But the April 2017 daughter of Top Savings and Body Clock stays strongly and she powered home to take the £7,500 in 37.45sec. She now heads to Romford for tonight’s Champion Stakes heats. Favourite for the prestigious stayers competition was the Mark Wallis trainer Antigua Fire who ran a stormer, just giving himself too much to do from his off-the-pace style in such top company. ➡️ In the Monmore Gold Cup, it’s was another trap 1 winner in the shape of Seaglass Tiger. Trainer Patrick Janssens has previously questioned the bravery of his dog but he did well to ride a bump at the first bend eventually winning in 28.28sec, taking the £10,000 pot and cementing Janssens place at the top of the trainers championship even further. ➡️ The £10,000 to the winner, Champion Stakes kicks off at Romford tonight with six heats, three qualifying from each. Here at Star Sports, Sporting Dave is the favourite at 6/1 but I think there is value to be had elsewhere. There is no doubting Dave is a class act but, at the prices, current track record holder and in form Quantum Leap appeals at 8/1. Pam Dolby’s runner clocked 34.62sec (+40) last time out and is a prolific winner at the Essex track – she has drawn trap 6 in heat 5. Mark Wallis, as always, has a strong hand in the competition and I like his bitch Chubbys Caviar at 12/1 and also track specialist Shotgun Bullet trained by Derek Knight, currently 14/1. ➡️ There is just over a week to go until submissions of interest to the GBGB to host the greyhound derby 2020. Rumour has it that Nottingham ARE prepared to put themselves forward, providing they can find a sponsor. There may be just two contenders, the other being Central Park. Promoter Roger Cairns is believed to be meeting with potential sponsors in the coming days. It’s going to be interesting! LATEST STARSPORTS.BET GREYHOUND MARKETS
