Willie Mullins won the Gold Cup but….

STAR EVENT: Punchestown Festival
Day Three
TIME: 5.30pm
TV: ATR

There’s nothing worse than a tipster bragging about successes having previously given a string of wretched selections.

There’s no bragging going on here – just frantic mopping – mopping up of previous losses.

However, thanks to Dortmund winning, better than we could have hoped for, last night the last three daily tips have won – netting around 18 points to recommended stakes.

So last Sunday’s losses on CHARLIE HOFFMAN who blew a two shot lead are MOPPED UP

Saturday’s losses on QPR’s disastrous home defeat to Stoke are MOPPED UP

Friday’s losses on HULL CITY’S bore draw are MOPPED UP

That’s a lot of mopping up and a lot more to be done.

Can we make it four on the spin today ?

Well we are back at Punchestown after a Champions League detour in Germany.

QUESTION READERS: I wonder if Willie Mullins is happy with how his horses are going this week?

That might sound a barmy question about a trainer who has had two winners in two days including the Gold Cup with Sir Des Champs but we raise the question simply because of the extraordinary high standards we are so used to seeing from Mullins.

The two winners have come from 18 runners and both wins were hard fought 3/4 length successes.

In our mind Mullins form is well below his best. Outlander, Inish Island, Ballycasey, Call Me Bubbles, Back In Focus and notably Champagne Fever have all gone off at 3/1 or less this week and been beaten – in many cases running well below their best.

There’s little to choose in the overnight Star Sports market between World Hurdle winner Solwhit and the remarkable mare Quevega, trained by Mullins. It’s definitely one of the races of the Festival but we very much prefer the chances of Solwhit who is bidding to record the Cheltenham – Aintree – Punchestown treble just like Mr S Sacre.

Quevega won this well last year but it looks tougher today and there is vulnerability with her outside of her ‘own’ race at Cheltenham.

Couple this with the Mullins form factor above and the column is very much with Solwhit.

Here’s hoping he mops up.
