WORLD CUP PREVIEW Fri: England v USA

After a thumping victory in their opening game of the tournament, which certainly raised expectations and moved them to second-favourites with starsports.bet to win the World Cup, England now need to back it up in their clash against USA on Friday at the Al Bayt Stadium.

England were the overwhelming favourites to beat Iran in their opening match, and the expectation was that they would do that, but many also assumed that it would be a challenge for the Three Lions to break Carlos Quieroz’s side down — it wasn’t.

The intensity and tempo that England played at was in stark contrast to some of the flat and tepid performances that were produced during their recent Nations League campaign. Right from the start, you could tell that this Three Lions side were playing with purpose and a point to prove.

Jude Bellingham, who is constantly proving himself to be one of the best young players in world football, was once again magnificent and opened the scoring with a glancing header in the 35th-minute.

Buyako Saka, another exciting young talent, lashed the ball into the top corner moments later to increase the lead to two before Raheem Sterling made it three in first-half stoppage-time.

England continued to look dangerous and threatening in the second-half and added three more goals, although did let two in at the other end which included a controversial late penalty that was awared by VAR.

There were many impressive performances among the England side. Sterling and Saka, for example, looked so dynamic in attack, but it was Bellingham who stole the show and was deserving of his first international goal.

The one downside, though, was the injuries suffered by Harry Kane and Harry Maguire with Kane going off after a heavy knock on the ankle and Maguire being withdrawn after what appeared to be a clash of heads with an Iran player.

The early indiciations are that Maguire should be okay to feature against USA, but England are still sweating over the fitness of Kane who was forced to go for a scan on that ankle on Wednesday.

If Kane is unable to play a part in this game on Friday, Gareth Southgate will have to decide whether it is Callum Wilson, Marcus Rashford or Phil Foden – who has played there before for Manchester City – who will come in in his place.

After the joy that England had against Iran, it appears likely that Southgate will stick with a flat back-four rather than a revert to a back-three.

USA drew 1-1 against Wales in their first match of the the tournament in a real game of two halves at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium on Monday evening.

They were by far the better side in the first 45 minutes with Timothy Weah – son of the legendary George – giving them a deserved lead at the interval with a smart, clever finish past Wayne Hennessey in the 36th-minute.

However, inspired by the half-time introduction of Kieffer Moore, Wales massively improved in the second-half with USA going back into their shell somewhat and it didn’t come as a huge surprise when Gareth Bale levelled the scores with eight minutes remaining.

Christian Pulisic played impressively, putting some of his struggles and frustrations at club level with Chelsea behind him, and USA will need him to continue putting in good performances if they are to go well at this World Cup.

With the World Cup well underway, we’re arguably yet to see a performance – certainly from an attacking point of view – that has been as impressive as England’s against Iran and I expect them to carry some of the momentum from that into this clash against USA.

However, when England are in a back-four, I still feel there are some frailties in that defence that are there to be got at and I think there’s a chance that they could concede against USA for that reason. I am backing England to win and both teams to score with Raheem Sterling to score anytime with starsports.bet.
