WORLD CUP PREVIEW Sat: Netherlands v USA

The Netherlands, the winners of group A, take on USA, the runners-up in group B, as the knockout stages begin at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar at the Khalifa International Stadium.

Louis Van Gaal blasted his side after their disappointing draw against Ecuador in order to try and galvanise and spark a response out of his team – and they did manage to deliver.

They comfortably breezed past Qatar, barely needing to get out of first gear, in a 2-0 victory in their final group match which secured their route to the knockout stages; beating Senegal to top-spot in the group.

You do get the feeling that more needs to come from this Dutch side, though, if they are to go deep into this tournament and more was probably expected from them in a group that they should have made lighter work of than they did.

They will be without right-back Jeremie Frimpong after he suffered an ankle injury in training – which may sideline him for the rest of the tournament – but Denzel Dumfries has been a favourite of Van Gaal’s so would probably have started for this one anyway.

Traders’ view: “Not been overly impressed by the Netherlands. They’ll need Depay to start and get his tournament going. Can see another low scoring cagey game, really.”

USA would have been disappointed to drop points in their opening match of the tournament against Wales, with a late Gareth Bale penalty denying them the three points, but they bounced back in the subsequent two matches with impressive performances.

Against England, although they were held to a goalless draw, the US looked the more impressive and adventurous of the two sides and probably came away feeling that they should have got more.

And when they need to deliver against Iran, they did, with players such as Tyler Adams and Christian Pulisic really turning it on when they needed to.

Josh Sargent won’t be fit to face the Netherlands are going down with an ankle injury and the availability of Weston McKennie is also unclear as he continues to deal with a quad issue.

I echo the earlier thoughts of the starsports.bet trader that the Netherlands were not particularly impressive in the group-stages and I think there is definite potential for an upset here – if you can describe it as that.

Perhaps there could be a lack of goals in this USA side, but they played some really nice stuff in the group-stages – including in that draw against England – and there was more to get excited about in Gregg Berhalter’s side than the Dutch. At 7/4, USA to win the tie looks appealing and that is what I am backing here.
