WORLD CUP PREVIEW Sun: Spain v Germany

The World Cup hasn’t yet served up any particularly tasty head to heads, the seeding in the draw takes care of that, but Spain v Germany in Group E always looked one of the standout Group Stage ties when the balls came out the drum.

However it also had the potential to be one of the dullest games – two European sides in cruise control to the last 16 knowing that even a 0-0 draw would send them both on their way. Job done.

Tear up the script.

Japan changed everything when beating Germany and they could be their nemesis again on Sunday as a win against Costa Rica in the earlier 10am KO will pile on the pressure even more on Germany in what then becomes a must win match.

Given Japan are 4/9 to beat Costa Rica with starsports.bet that scenario looks very likely to be played out.

Star Sports’ head of trading Dave Jolly said: “This match has all the ingredients to be the most meaningful one so far, particularly if Japan win earlier in the day. We’ve got two potential tournament winners going head to head and the 7pm time-slot should attract plenty of support – probably only second to England games so far in terms of betting interest.

“We were keen to get Spain in the book as we weren’t sure where their goals were coming from. That theory was severely tested when they put seven past Costa Rica but we’ve still got to see them do it against a much stronger defence. The fact that Germany are likely to have to chase the game adds another dimension which might open up gaps for Spain to take advantage of.

“We saw a bit of interest on Spain in the outrights after their win over Costa Rica and Torres has obviously shortened for the Golden Boot with his brace.”

When Germany crashed out at the Group Stage in Russia four years ago it was considered unthinkable – so goodness knows what lightning striking twice will be viewed as for the national side? And that scenario is now firmly odds-on with Germany out to 7/4 to qualify from Group E with starsports.bet.

Sometimes teams can be excused defeats on the basis of the way they played, were unlucky etc but that wasn’t the case for Germany in the Japan game. There was no fluke about Japan’s win.

Germany squandered endless opportunities to put the game to bed after converting a 33rd minute penalty but Hansi Flick’s side sleepwalked in the second half and their defence was picked off twice despite dominating possession.

Surprisingly the two sides haven’t met since the 2010 World Cup when Spain progressed to the final (and eventually lifting the trophy) after a 1-0 win.

The best formguide is probably the most recent formguide and it’s hard to look beyond Spain. I’d have been with them anyway but with the Germans in the unusual position of having to force the game I think that’ll leave them vulnerable.

I think there will be goals too, so am happy to play a combination of three bets with starsports.bet which all reflect Spanish domination and superiority.
