PRESS RELEASE: 15% of punters backing England for World Cup glory
France and Spain account for over 50% of bets; Senegal worst result
England account for 15% of bets in Star Sports’ World Cup outright market, behind both France and Spain.
Despite the leading independent bookmaker offering an industry top-price of 8/1 on the Three Lions going all the way, more punters are supporting joint-favourites France (9/2) and Spain (9/2) for World Cup glory.
The pair account for over 50% of bets in the outright market, while Scotland (250/1) have taken less than 0.5% of all bets.
A win for outsiders Senegal (80/1) remains the firm’s worst result.
Flynn Goward, Managing Director at Star Sports, said: “The patriotic bet is always strong ahead of the World Cup and while punters are certainly jumping on the bandwagon, England are well behind both Spain and France in terms of percentage of bets placed.
“We’re an industry top-price of 8/1 on the Three Lions, who have seen 15% of bets in our outright World Cup market, but it’s 9/2 joint-favourites France and Spain that account for over 50% of bets between them.
“We’ve taken less than 0.5% of bets on Scotland in the outright market, suggesting the Tartan Army don’t believe a miracle will happen in North America.
“However, despite the weight of money behind France, Spain and England, it’s 80/1-shot Senegal that would really inflict painful losses if they emerged triumphant.”
