STAR BOXING PREVIEW: Fabio Wardley v Daniel Dubois

Two of British boxing’s biggest punchers go head-to-head on Saturday night as unbeaten WBO heavyweight champion Fabio Wardley defends his title against fellow countryman Daniel Dubois, writes JOE CITRONE.

After victories over Frazer Clarke and Justis Huni, Fabio Wardley earned interim champion status with a career-best win over Joseph Parker before being elevated to full champion when heavyweight king Oleksandr Usyk opted to vacate the title rather than fulfill his mandatory obligations.

Although the Suffolk-born fighter has picked up some solid wins on paper, Dubois surely presents his toughest test yet in his first world title defence.

Dubois has three defeats on his record, compared to the blemishless resume of Wardley, but two of those losses came against Usyk, widely regarded as the best heavyweight in the world, while a fractured eye socket ended his contest with Joe Joyce prematurely.

Since then, Dubois has managed to accumulate some impressive wins, which, of course, includes a statement victory over former world champion Anthony Joshua in 2024, whom he stopped in convincing fashion after a dominant display.

Wardley’s toughness and durability are beyond question, and his rise from the white-collar boxing scene to world champion level deserves enormous credit, but defensive sharpness and head movement have never been the strongest parts of his game.

Against a devastating puncher with 21 knockouts from 22 wins, that could be a dangerous weakness. If Dubois is able to land clean on Wardley, which he will be confident of doing due to those aforementioned defensive frailties, it may prove to be costly for the man from Ipswich.

At 13/8 to reclaim world honours via a stoppage win, Dubois looks like really good value here – and that’s my selection on Saturday night.
