POV: I Feel Sorry for the EFL (Joe Citrone)
Joe Citrone shares his perspective on the allegations that Southampton spied on Middlesbrough ahead of their play-off showdown – examining the controversy, the reaction, and what the consequences could be moving forward.
You just couldn’t write it, could you?
Even by the Championship’s standards, which never seems to be short of drama, this last week or so has been absolutely bonkers.
To recap, the controversy centres on claims that Southampton gathered intelligence on Middlesbrough’s preparations before their Championship play-off clash by spying on one of their training sessions.
On one side, you have an outraged Middlesbrough camp. Knocked out of the play-offs by the ironically nicknamed Saints on Tuesday, they now want Southampton thrown out altogether. On the other, there are those who see the whole thing as being blown out of proportion.
Without wishing to get splinters in my backside from sitting on the fence, I fall somewhere in the middle.
And honestly – words I never thought I’d say – I do have some sympathy for the EFL here.
The timing and circumstances of the incident have left them in an almost impossible position. Whatever verdict they reach, and whatever punishment they hand down, someone is going to feel seriously aggrieved.
Had this happened midway through the season, there would have been time to properly assess the evidence, gather statements, and reach a measured conclusion. But with the play-off final now only days away, the EFL simply doesn’t have that luxury.
So, as much as everyone loves to give the EFL stick, this time…let’s maybe cut them some slack and realise the impossible position they find themselves in.
