HARRY SKELTON: Weekend Debrief

It was a successful weekend, and great to ride four winners at Wetherby, including a couple of winning spares, writes HARRY SKELTON.

WETHERBY

SATURDAY

MINELLA HOLLOW

It looked a good opportunity for him. He did everything right; he jumped well, travelled nicely and won comfortably. He was a nice spare ride to pick up for John Nallen.

KATEIRA

She was really tough to win the mares’ hurdle for a second year. She’s a joy to ride and still has great enthusiasm for her racing. She had a bit of a fight late on, but she stuck her neck out well and it was great to get another Listed win with her.

TAKE NO CHANCES

She ran well in the Grade 2 hurdle, but just bumped into Strong Leader again, who is a tough nut to crack around Wetherby. Hopefully, we’ll find another opportunity for her soon, against the mares somewhere.

PIC D’ORHY

He did everything we hoped he would in the Charlie Hall, winning impressively. He jumped and travelled very well and he was just in a different class to the rest of them. No disrespect to the others, but without his penalty he was the class horse in the race, and he showed it. He made one mistake down the back, but that was my fault when I should have sat still. Where we go next, I’m not so sure, but his main target will be at Ascot in February.

FILIBUSTERING

He was another nice spare-ride winner to pick up, this time for Harry Derham. He seemed to really enjoy the good ground when getting up late to win.

CARLISLE

SUNDAY

KEOPS DES BORDES

It was nice to get him back on the track. He’s very lightly raced, and I think he did plenty wrong during the contest, but still managed to win. He ran quite fresh and was charging into his hurdles a bit. I think this run will have done him the world of good.

SUPREMELY WEST

He ran disappointingly in the two-and-a-half-mile handicap hurdle. Afterwards the vets actually reported him to have a fibrillating heart, which is a bit of a blip for him, and we’ll need to get him back right. It was too bad a run to be true, so hopefully we can get him back on track.

Week Ahead…

We’re expecting to have plenty of runners this week and to have some really nice horses out on the track. The horses are in good form and we’re prepared for a busy few days.

We do need a bit of rain, and we’ll try to go to the places that have a bit of soft in their going description. We’re expecting to head to Chepstow and Newbury, and then we’ll see what the ground is like at Aintree later in the week
