SIMON NOTT: A Professional Punter Says….

I have been contacted by a professional punter. He wishes to remain anonymous for the time being. However, he wants to air his views on how hard it is to maintain his ‘Parasite’ status as a person that bets for a living. In his own words he told me.

‘We know the majority of old school punting methods days are numbered. There aren’t any real angles left, so how do we stop playing into the bookies hands and their dreaded software?’

Beating SP

‘Beating the SP is no longer even a challenge they are for the most part beyond fictional, anyone with half a clue can beat the SP, my old nan could probably beat the SP. It’s pretty much all you use to have to do to steal yourself a living in the past. Not anymore, relying in purely getting the right prices over a bookmaker is a game that has long gone due to many factors.

Heavy Handed Punters

‘Almost a dying breed, but we all know the types, old school heavy hitters and very set in their ways. Yes, give them their due, they are decent judges and very disciplined with their prices, but when they make one 3/1 and it’s 7/2 look out. They are wading in with abandon, shovelling it on, as much as they can possibly get alongside the ‘I’m right they are wrong attitude.’ They don’t worry about tomorrow, ‘let’s punt for today’. It doesn’t go under the radar though does it, the firms are set up for exactly this and probably have been for best part of a decade, they spot it a mile off. Thank you very much, win or lose that’s another account gone, so that games totally finished’.

If that is the case the older ways are now virtually dead and buried. The margins have been dwindled. Fair punters will only last until all the betting accounts they can, beg, borrow or, we’ll draw the line at stealing, are compromised. His opinion is that there is only one real way left to make it pay properly, which is?

The Predator

‘By Predator, I mean a slow slow play ready for the big strike. We all know the rules, if you make something 2/1 and it’s 5/4 you don’t bet it. Even if it wins by 10 lengths, you don’t bat an eyelid, you were right not to bet it but you’ve missed a winner and not earned, still no drama. But the even worse scenario is when you make one 5/2 and they’ve priced it up at 6/1. That’s tremendous value let’s go. But you dare not back it, why?

They’ve made such a rick, it’s forbidden fruit, just total bait. If you back it, the bookmakers’ cards are marked and your accounts are spotted and restricted beyond use. You suffer the same fate as the dinosaurs, extinction. It’s a bloody nightmare, a real double whammy. You can’t bet the ones that don’t offer value because you’ll do your money over time, likewise you can’t risk backing the real ricks either because you’ll show your hand. The ‘Predator’ game is waiting for when the time is right.’

When is that?

Patience, that project, or at least some of it, will be revealed at our man’s leisure, to be continued…..
