BETTING ODDITIES: Place Your Bets Please …….

SPINNING THE WHEEL

It’s been a long time (thankfully for the bank balance) that I’ve visited a West End casino (Stakis, Russell Square in a previous life), but can remember on a busy night the croupier spinning the wheel almost at five minute intervals once the bets had been settled and the crowded table accommodated with new bets plus of course the ‘spin time’.

Fast forward to 2022 and horse races on a Saturday are going off more frequently that the roulette wheel and it’s a real turn off for many – including me. Racing TV had five live meetings last Saturday and it was like a fast food restaurant – in many cases not even having time to show a replay.

And some of these races were quite high profile and valuable events – mainly sponsored. The value the sponsor gets from advertising in rush hour? Next to nothing I would humbly suggest. Less really is more sometimes.

THE LUCK OF THE DRAW

Thankfully the action on the track at Towcester has gone a bit smoother than the live draws for the Star Sports Greyhound Derby. Let’s just say a few technical gremlins have crept into the live streaming which has kept us on our toes. It’s easy to forget though just how far technology has come to allow (sometimes grrrr) events to be streamed live across the world from just an iPhone.

It wouldn’t have been that long ago that you would have needed trucks and satellite dishes to even attempt it. We go again for the third round draw at 1pm on Monday. It’s just now just a case of whether you believe in (a) third time lucky or (b) bad things go in threes. I’m evens each of two …..

SOMEWHERE IN THE CROWD THERE’S YOU ….

Mamma Mia !! The West End show held open auditions this week and attracted over 2,000 hopefuls. It made for a nice advert for the long-running show but on a more serious level surely they can conduct auditions in a more sensible way?

Not everyone was seen – it’s simply impossible to audition that many people in a day – and many younger people had paid significant travel costs to attend the audition at Mamma Mia’s London home – the Novello Theatre. In this day and age surely a first phase of auditions via videos would help everyone. The winner does take it all – even in 2,000 strong field.
