#BettingPeople:Β  Newcastle-born and-bred Paul Willis has lived in the USA since 1984 but started his sporting life working with his on-course bookmaking father in the Silver Rings of the North but venturing as far south as the Epsom Derby, working the floor, clerking and tic tacking. He was also a talented footballer, a contemporary of Paul Gascoigne signed to Newcastle United up to Under 19’s. Paul then moved to the USA where he won awards for soccer, set up his own football club and championed steeplechasing in the USA with horses in training in the USA, Ireland and the UK including his Atlantic Friends syndicate. Paul talks about his horseracing interests, his childhood in Newcastle working for his on-course bookmaking father, learning to work the floor, clerk and tic-tac, and remembers the race meetings that cemented his love for national hunt racing and why he didn’t follow in his father’s footsteps in the betting ring.

Paul talks about his passion for football, his dream of playing professional football, signing for Newcastle United and playing up to Under 19’s standard, getting to know a young Paul Gascoigne. He talks about his move to the USA in 1984, becoming a national soccer champion, founding Seacoast United Soccer Club in 1992 and covering 43 states as vice president of 3 Steps Sports.

Paul discusses National Hunt racing in the USA and elaborates on his racing interests in the USA, Ireland and the UK. He talks about his efforts to introduce new owners to jump racing with his Atlantic Friends syndicate which has had success on both sides of the Atlantic and his sporting plans for the future.
