It’s been 341 days since my last ride (not that I’m counting) so it goes without saying that I’m delighted to be finally race riding again at Downpatrick on Friday when I travel north for two rides for Gordon (Elliott).
It’s a four hour journey for me, so I’ll have plenty of time to gather my thoughts on being back at the day job but for the moment I’m just looking forward to getting back in the weighing room and just trying to remember to pack everything I need – it’s been a while!
Thoughts on the chances of my two below but before that I would just like to thank everyone who has supported me on my road to recovery from the medical teams at the Mater Hospital in Dublin to my family of course who have been terrific and I won’t be under their feet quite so much now.
I was working a few horses in the Curragh on Thursday morning and riding a few ponies later in the day.
THE GREEK (1.25pm) Bill McIlroy Bookmaker Maiden Hurdle 2m 3f
My fella has knocked at the door a few times including in Kilbeggan where he was a close second to The Cathal Dan in a race where the front two pulled miles clear. He didn’t really build on that when third at Tramore the last day so he needs to put his best foot forward and The Banger Doyle might be the one we have to fear most.
THE ABBEY (3.45pm) Irish Stallion Farms EBF Beginners Chase 2m 2f
Twice a winner on the flat, we’ve struggled so far over the jumps with this eight-year-old. He was pulled up in Tipperary back in July and has had a break since then. On the positive side though he runs best fresh and has run his best races so far over fences here at Downpatrick finishing 223 from three starts.
