GEORGE BOUGHEY: Weekend Preview

It’s St Leger Weekend. I haven’t got one in there, but I’d love to see Billy win it! writes GEORGE BOUGHEY.

SATURDAY

ELECTRIC ARC – 1.38 Lingfield

I’m hoping we see a completely different filly from Electric Arc this time. She was still very weak and raw when we ran her in the early part of the summer and she was just never at the races on debut.

In hindsight, I probably ran her too soon. She’s had plenty of time since and I genuinely think she can take a big step forward. I’d almost forget that first run and I think she’ll run nicely.

GREEN STAR – 2.40 Chester

Green Star has done plenty of work and should know enough on debut to run well. He’s a straightforward horse who looks to be going the right way.

Seven furlongs looks his trip and, unusually for us at Chester, he’s drawn in a nice gate. I’d expect him to give a good account of himself.

DOWMAN – 3.08 Bath

It didn’t really happen for Dowman at Chepstow last time. I thought he would run well that day, but he was too free and hated the track.

He returns to Bath, where he ran with credit on his first two starts, and I’d expect him to run much better than he did a couple of weeks ago.

THIS MOMENT – 3.20 Chester

This Moment goes there looking for a hat-trick and has another nice draw. He’s improving with every run and looks to have taken another step forward since his latest success.

We want to capitalise while he’s in this sort of form and I think he should go very well again.

MOONFALL – 4.15 Doncaster

Moonfall was probably unlucky to have his pocket picked at Ascot last time and he’s taken that run very well.

He does want decent enough ground, so hopefully they avoid too much rain. It’s a fairly quick turnaround, but he has bounced out of Ascot and I think Doncaster should suit him well. Billy rides and, if he repeats that Ascot performance, he should be very competitive.

KAORI – 4.47 Lingfield

Kaori has been a little difficult to win with this year, but she drops in grade into a 0-70 and I thought this looked a good opportunity for her to be very competitive.

The track is a slight question mark because she didn’t seem to handle it particularly well when she ran there previously, but you can’t always get everything in your favour. She’s a well-bred daughter of Dubawi and making her a winner would obviously be very important for her pedigree.

SUNDAY

OLIVER SHOW & ASUKA – 1.55 Doncaster

At this stage, I expect both Oliver Show and Asuka to run.

Oliver Show ran very well in this race last year. He drops back in trip but loves Doncaster, and this looked the least competitive of the races available to him over the weekend. He’s come out of his latest run in great shape.

Asuka also drops back a furlong from Chester. His work has been at a level that suggests he can win off his current mark and he had a shocking draw last time. He’s in great shape and I think both horses should be right in the mix.

BEST CHANCES: THIS MOMENT & MOONFALL

This Moment and Moonfall are probably the two standouts over the weekend. This Moment is improving and arrives chasing a hat-trick, while Moonfall should be very competitive if reproducing his Ascot run.

ST LEGER PICK

I’d love to see Billy win the St Leger for Joseph on Enceladus. His horse looks to have the perfect profile for the race and, if they can avoid too much rain, I think he should be very competitive. Come on, Billy!
