The key question for her is if she could possibly get the official backing of Sinn Fèin – many left figures are backing her campaign, but an official endorsement would be significant.

“Heather Humphreys is now 9/4 from 5/1 after McGuiness’s withdrawal and the confirmation she will run for the Fine Gael nomination against Seán Kelly, next in at 4/1. The winner of that battle will be a major player, and their chances would be enhanced if Mary Lou McDonald (15/2), ran and was endorsed by Sinn Fèin, possibly splitting the left vote.

“Among Fianna Fáil names, former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern (7/1) would generate plenty of headlines and has Stan ding from his work in the past, although past conserves would surely be an issue. Outside shots such as Deirdre Heenan (20/1) and Frances Black (20/1) would need significant backing to be competitive.

“Celebrity and wildcard candidates pepper the list – Conor McGregor (40/1), Miriam O’Callaghan (66/1), Joe Brolly (66/1) – but serious nomination hurdles make them hard to back with confidence and talk of a celebrity run for McGregor is very unrealistic. At this stage, the most realistic pathway looks to be an FG-backed runner versus Connolly, with Sinn Féin trying to break through if Mary Lou commits.”
