SIMON NOTT BETTING BLOG: Fontwell Tuesday

It was a very pleasant and uneventful drive up to Fontwell today, just how I like it. First impression was that the carpark looked a bit thin but it’s often quality not quantity at weekday meetings, we’d soon find out, writes SIMON NOTT.

One of the first people I bumped into was the gentleman that is Joe Beevers, he’d been at Laytown the same as I and was saying how much he enjoyed it. He joins my concern that Spinning Mick had been traipsing the streets rather than pull up some folding for a room, luckily he is alive and well, evidently not too old to pull an all-nighter prior to his 6am flight home, he’s a better man than me that’s for sure.

14:12 – Betting.Bet Free Racing Tips Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle (Class 4) (3YO plus 0-110)

It was a glorious afternoon here at Fontwell, Star Sports boasted two pitches with Dan on one and Tony and Kaan the other, both teams were in shirt-sleeved order which must have been a treat this late in September. The crowd appeared as if from nowhere as the horses went to post keeping the guys busy. The first bet of any note though, was £250 each-way Sun Joy at 11/2 and they were off. The book held £1491, keeping £284 of it when Virtual Rock the 6/5 jolly won the race to wild celebrations in the ring by I assume connections.

14:47 – City Electrical Factors Handicap Chase (Fontwell Chase Series Qualifier) (GBB Race) (Class 4) (4YO plus 0-120)

Next up and I got chatting to Paul, who is a fellow ‘Sharp’ bettor where we swapped the ups downs and ups of that particular method of trying to beat the books and Dave who was kind enough to come over to say that he enjoys reading these blogs, both very nice to meet. Meanwhile, while I was gassing, the two pitches were busy, bets struck included £1500 – £500 and £2750 – £1000 Lermoos Legend and £2250 – £1000 American Land into a book bolstered by public money amounting to £3907 at the off.

Lermoos Legend was red in the ledger for over £5000, Jack Lynn used to say that big layers needed rings of steel, there would have been some orifice oscillating when the bogie came to challenge long time leader Tapley over the last but thankfully the Gary and Josh Moore gelding kept on keeping on under Caoilin Quinn to win the race, copping £3767, some turnaround.

15:22 – Betting.Bet New Betting Sites Juvenile Maiden Hurdle (GBB Race) (Class 4) (3YO)

It wasn’t all one way though an away punter had a grand on Call Me Tomorrow at 15/8 over at Beverley which copped, he then pressed some of that up having £1625 on Tralee Girl over at Warwick at 4/6. She was beaten – in one hand, out the other. Rum Diamond was all the rage here, or at least on-line at this the home race backed from 11/10 to 8/11 but not with Star Sports on course, the only bet they laid was £3000-£1000 Ollierob late on which pretty much doubled the field money on the race which totalled £2008 at the off. Royal Sapphire winning at 20/1 was a cracking result on paper but was the smallest winner in the book, winning £697, the outside had been popular with the smaller punters and those bets all add up at those sort of prices.

15:57 – Setford Handicap Hurdle (Class 4) (4YO plus 0-110)

Next up, the away punter bet a £2000 double Flight Tracker at 8/13 over at Southwell and Flashy Boy at 8/11 in the penultimate here. Meanwhile, there was very little of interest in this, the race before the penultimate; the books held £1280 between them, boasting a loser for £1059 Starshine Legend and a taker in the shape of Motazzen. ‘A nice little book,’ beamed Genghis. As they were racing, Dan came over to warn that there a few nasty forecasts taking out over a monkey should they cop, ‘They can’t win’ was Tony’s dismissal, he was right too, the ‘taker’ won but the book copped £347, an Aye Aye worthy result.

16:32 – Betting.Bet Play Champion Tipster Handicap Chase (GBB Race) (Class 4) (4YO plus 0-110)

The first leg of the double went off at 4/11 but was beaten so the Star Sports trio were waiting with baited breath to see if the big punter would be back to have a press up on Flashy Boy here, which had drifted to even money. No was the answer to that question, at the off the book held £1035 with no bets of any note. Yes Day the 2/1 second-in won the race, the book lost £390 which was a blow to blow but going into the last the book was winning £6381, not bad for a Tuesday.

17:07 – Betting.Bet Free Bets Novices’ Limited Handicap Hurdle (Class 5) (3YO plus 0-95)

The lucky last looked like a cracking betting heat where they bet 11/4 the field with Winston’s Oath heading the market. During betting on the race I heard a young lady talking to her male companion; she suggested ‘We should back Guinness Lad, and if he wins we can all buy a pint and split the G’, good girl I thought, and immediately hoped Guinness Lad would win for the lady and her pals, at 7/1 they should be able to afford a drink should he win.

She didn’t bet her fancy with Star Sports, but they did limp over the grand mark in field money in a book where the weak Winston’s Oath was the loser for £744. Sadly, Guinness Lad wasn’t going to pay for the post-race round but I hope they still had one, and split the G. 11/1 chance No Mean Feat won the race, the book won £167, topping off a very good winning Tuesday, no mean feat indeed.
