SIMON NOTT BETTING BLOG: Glorious Goodwood Friday

Goodwood Friday and once again the weather was glorious, despite the first three days not having gone the betting ring’s way, Star Sports were still somewhat surprisingly £7500 ish in front on the meeting not deducting the Ivy bill, writes SIMON NOTT.

The concluding two days should be by far the busiest of the week so it really was all to play for, the punters had surely used up their quota of jollies and the results would start to flow at just the right time. That was the hope anyway.

1:50 – Coral Goodwood Handicap (GBBPlus Race) (Class 2) (3YO plus)

The opening heat was traditionally a wonderful sight to kick off, a flag start for the 2m 5f handicap, sadly another part of racing heritage fell foul of the march of progress, for the first time the race would be started using stalls, a shame but ultimately inevitable I suppose. The crowd appeared massive compared to previous days, there were some decent punters among them but on the whole they were more recreational and plentiful. Bets struck in the early skirmishes included £3500 – £1000 and £2000 – £600 Valiancy and £2250 – £500 Defiantly.

As an aside, there was some real banter going on at the rails pitch. Alex the BHA graduate was asked by a lady of a certain age what horse he fancied, he gave his, random, selection, she backed in and then told him that if it won she’d come back and ‘show him her tits’, but more sauce was to follow, another punter had a bet with Pam, he was a novice backer so Pam explained that if the horse won he’d have to come back to see her with his ticket. He replied that should it win he’d come round the back and ‘stir her couscous! Blimey did I wake up in the 1970’s I hear you cry.

There were no more big bets but the combined books held £7530 at the off and blew £2327 when the 17th market leader of this year’s Glorious Goodwood ran away with the race Defiantly first the rest nowhere. I was included in an interview with Simon Clare of Coral for ITV racing recorded prior to broadcast both saying we hoped it would turn. It hadn’t yet.

2.25 – HKJC World Pool Thoroughbred Stakes (Group 3) (Class 1) (3YO only)

In all the excitement, I forgot to mention the teams; today there had been one change, Dan had replaced Russ in Tatts who had in turn been dispatched to Bath.

Next up and an odds-on favourite Talk Of New York for the punters to get stuck into, the bookmakers appeared keen to let them get stuck in too, races were running out to get out on so chests needed to be puffed. A punter waded into the rail pitch and bet £6000 – £13,500 with not mention of exposing himself of stirring anything apart from the pot. That bet was followed by a bet of £500 – £1000 which on the back of a drift.

At the off, the book held £19,396 with the jolly losing £6500. Hold on to your hats ladies and gentleman, we got one beat, Shayem wore was first to wear down the long time leader hanging on well from the jolly who was too late on the scene, £15,156 copped, the bookies roared, the punters faced a bit of they can’t all win reality. Aye Aye, and to top it off Neil Channing tipped the winner to his Betting Emporium clients, as he did the opener, he’s clever that Neil.

3:00 – Coral Golden Mile (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) (3YO plus)

The reversal didn’t appear to deter punters getting stuck into the next, bets of £10,000 – £3000 and £1000 – £300 Indalo, £11,000 – £2000 Blue Brother, £12,000 – £2000 Tribal Chief and £9000 – £1000 Scoville ensured that there was something to win in the heat, of course there were some lumpy losers too, but now was the time to let the punters do the heavy lifting.

A bagman was also trying to do some, attempting have £16,000 – £1000 Archivist next door when it was shorter on the board, cards were marked but nothing done. He did a massive favour, it only went and won, returned 16/1 and was a £10,370 cop in a £12,324 book.

3:35 – King George Qatar Stakes (Group 2) (Class 1) (3YO plus)

The next heat started a little slow, maybe the punters were still digesting the reality that they could actually lose, the field were going to post before a flurry of bets which included £12,500 – £5000 Night Raider, £11,000 – £2000 Jakajaro and £16,500 – £3000 Rumstar. At the off the book held £15,635 with all three of the aforementioned losing.

Ultimately it was all academic; American Affair won the race, a 14/1 chance with Star Sports returned 12/1 and copped a further £13,166. At this point I’ll point out there had been some away business that had gone against the firm but for the continuity of the Goodwood report haven’t noted them, but going into the fifth the firm were about £25,000 up on the day.

4:10 – Regent Seven Seas Cruises Bentinck Conditions Stakes (Class 2) (4YO plus)

Next up and a tight looking seven-runner heat where they bet 3/1 the field with Boiling Point and Galen heading the market; punters couldn’t make their minds up, bets struck included £4800 – £1600 Boiling Point, £12,000 – £4000 and £1500 – £500 Galen, £12,000 – £4000 Jonquil and £11,250 – £2500 Haatem.

There were plenty of £200 and £300 bets too, many of them on Galen, which won, which was a blow knocking out £8488 and putting the firm on the back foot again, still well ahead but it was dwindling.

4:45 – Hawes & Curtis Nursery (Class 2) (2YO only) (Class 2) (2YO only)

The race before the penultimate was another hot looking 18-runner heat in which The Dancing Pirate opened 3/1 and was immediately smashed with a trade bet of £6000 – £2000. The punter that had been betting on the aways was weighed in and left which was a shame, there was no chance of getting that back, still the teams cracked on. The only other bet of note on the race was £550 at 5/2 the same horse, at the off the book held £7485.

Neil ‘Nostradamus’ Channing put Revels up to Betting Emporium clients, Kaan had a lean up so the short head victory of said tipped up beast was very handy indeed. Bear in mind Kaan was ducking the winner, Star Sports were 12/1 at the off, the SP was 11/1. The book copped £5785.

5:20 – World Pool Bet With The Tote Handicap (GBBPlus Race) (Class 3) (3YO only)

The penultimate race saw a bit more away activity but this time it went the way of the firm. You can always ask Star Sports for a bet large or small on the aways if you are racing. Sadly, the home race was a slower betting affair than we’d seen for earlier races on the card. The decent business that there the teams did take was all for Into The Light bets included a carpet at 11/4 plus £1000 and another £300 at 5/2.

A later £1000-£400 Into The Light ensured he’d go off a hefty loser for over £7000 in the win book. £7034 in a book that held £6630 to be exact which was a shame because he won. Neil’s selection, Devil’s Peak advised each-way finished runner up.

5:55 – British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies’ Handicap (Class 2) (3YO plus)

I mentioned that the winnings had dwindled; they’d really dwindled, going into the lucky last the firm were just a precarious £4000 up. Today would probably rest on whether the punters waded into the 11/10 jolly Silver Lake then if it won.

You never know in this game, £4000 dropped on a loser over at Bath doubled the ahead figure going into the lucky last. There was a lively bagman snapping up at the 6/5 the favourite as the horses went to post, there wasn’t much left so I imagine pickings were meagre. Star Sports managed to lay £8800 – £8000 to a punter shortly after so ducked that right.

Other bets struck included an even £400, £440 – £440 plus £1350 to £600 Room Fourteen. As the horses loaded a punter was walking up and down the line asking for evens, that ship had sailed, the jolly was a 5/6 chance the bagman knew as they often do. They really did, Silver Lake bolted up. The book lost £7415 which after the numbers had been crunched it had been a winning day, to the tune of £787, after all that.

Oh, one last point, the SP was 4/5, off course punters, ever felt cheated?
