SIMON NOTT BETTING BLOG: Glorious Goodwood Saturday
The last day of Glorious Goodwood was upon us before we knew it, it’s been a long and enjoyable week, most importantly a winning one. The crowd today seemed a bit thin, it’s quite often like that, people are exploring rather than betting on the first. Takings on the Tatts pitch were very poor, ‘Beyond desperate’ was Lofty’s summing up.
1:40 – Coral Stewards’ Sprint Handicap (Class 2) (3YO plus) 6f
It was also quiet over on the rail, at least mostly, Flynn was keen to get the jolly in the book, when he saw a punter armed with a wedge of readies approaching the joint, he must have thought he’d made a start. However, it wasn’t the 4/5 shot Classic he was after but £600 on The Foxes at 8/1. I don’t know who was, but certainly can never have read one of my blogs, the fraction for 8/1 is 100/12, had he asked for fractions he’d have backed his selection to win £5000, instead, he stood to win £4800.
Between the punters betting small each-way, another backer came in with £1500 on the jolly to win £1200 which made that a loser too. Whilst there was no more money on course for it, The Foxes took a tumble on the machine and ultimately here too. That money was inspired, the gamble was landed by a neck with the jolly back in second. Whilst the majority of the ring were cheering the fact the odds-on favourite was beaten, the rails book lost £2500. Just as well the punter didn’t ask for the fractions, a bottle saved.
1:05 – British E.B.F. Ebf Maiden Stakes (Class 2) (2YO only) 7f
The first race reversal hopefully wasn’t a bad omen for the rest of the day, it really would be nice to leave Glorious Goodwood having written about the firm winning on five consecutive days. It seemed that the largely small staking on races would continue so the lads would have their work cut out to field enough.
Lofty said his Tatt’s pitch was busy but beyond small, then added, ‘If the favourite wins. bring pound coins’. That favourite being Lethal Levi (generally a shade of odds-on) but the rails team had laid an even £600 the biggest bet in a race where wagers were plentiful but mostly shrapnel. ‘The £2.50 each-way button has smoke coming off it’ was Kyle’s metaphorical observation.
Whilst the sponsors were reportedly disappointed with the field size of this race, it didn’t lack excitement resulting in a blanket photo where 8/1 chance Many A Star was a head too good for unlucky in running 16/1 runner-up The Lamplighter with 50/1 Dark Shot third. A great result in which the rails book copped £2000 and Lofty didn’t need further pound coins. Back on track.
2:10 – Coral Summer Handicap (Class 2) (3YO plus) 1m 6f
The next race was very competitive on paper, with four horses hovering around the 4/1 mark at the head of the market. Once again money was small but brisk with the odd fair bet in between. One of the market leaders Bague D’Oor attracted a monkey at 9/2, the other three figure bet £250 was for Trawlerman. At the off the bogies were Bague D’Or losing a grand and Chemhaan losing £500 with everything else winning.
6/1 chance Trawlerman won the race from Bague D’Or and bagged the rails book a monkey in the process. Lofty’s team fared better copping £1200, most in fivers and pound coins, four races to go and a winning day five timer was still on the cards.
2:45 – Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes (Fillies’ And Mares’ Group 2) (Class 1) (3YO plus) 1m 6f
I really should learn not to tempt fate. It was a similar story with Lofty’s team, when I asked him how it was he told me much the same and appeared resigned to it staying that way, plenty of bets but mostly small. On the rails a couple of bigger backers had found Flynn and co. They both wanted to be on Sea La Rosa, the first bet struck was £4500 – £2000 and the next a little later on £4000 – £1600. At the off she was losing £7000. Urban Artist did her best to steal the race from the front. Had she held on at 18/1 it would have been a cracking result, sadly, and of course you know what’s coming, the bogie wore her down inside the final furlong with Emily Dickinson the 13/8 favourite which would have been a winner in the book staying on well to be third without ever looking like winning. That was a real reversal which knocked the stuffing out of the book.
3:20 – Coral Stewards’ Cup (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) (3YO plus) 6f
One of the biggest spectacle races of the season didn’t disappoint from a bookmakers point of view, 25/1 winner Commanche Falls was just the sort of result the layers were hoping for. As with these types of races, bets were mostly modest, but a punter did make it interesting having a £9000 – £800 each-way Mr Wagyu with Flynn and Tony on the rails. Getting him out of the frame turned it around again and pretty much made the book which copped £1800, with two races to go, it wasn’t over yet, obviously.
3:55 – Medallia Handicap (Class 2) (3YO only) 7f
It was even better when I asked Kyle how the book was doing, I would have raised an eyebrow if I had any to speak of when he said level on the day, it transpired that they’d laid a punter £3000 on Laatansa in the 2.52 at Doncaster and got him beaten which was very handy and although not a bet on a Goodwood race, was in the on-course book.
Over at Lofty’s pitch, despite the business being small, they had tapped their way to a £2500 profit going into this penultimate heat.
Back on the rails Flynn laid a bet of £4500 – £1500 Spirit Of Nguru late on, that made the jolly a loser for five grand in the book with Galiac a taker. Without being overly greedy or totally fanciful, you’d be hard pressed to have written in a better result for the betting ring than 18/1 shot I’m A Gambler beating 33/1 Gisburn home, OK you’d have had the favourite filling third spot not Galiac but we said we weren’t going to be greedy. The rails book copped £2500. Surely the only worry now being that the punter might not have any money left to lump on in the getting out stakes to top it all off.
Results aren’t always as them seem, Lofty actually did a monkey on the race, I suppose the winner’s name was a topical one for recreational punters.
4:30 – Federation Of Bloodstock Agents Handicap (Class 3) (3YO plus) 1m 1f
The betting on the last followed a similar pattern to the others. Mostly small bets with the odd one to make you jump a bit. In this case, £1400 – £400 Ajero and £3300 – £300 Rainbow Colours. Tapping over in Tatts Lofty’s book had plenty of small losers, the worst being rags, none of them won. The Gambling Gods evidently decided that the punters had suffered enough, Ajero, the bogie in the rails book won the last and returned the 7/2f. It knocked out what had been winning ‘Dead level’ reported Kyle and Flynn in unison. Lofty didn’t do enough damage to his £2000 in front, so it was officially a winning concluding day and five in a row in front at Glorious Goodwood 2022.
What a week it’s been, real Glorious Goodwood weather but not the traditional punter friendly results.
It’s so much more fun to write when the firm that are paying you win on the week! I’m back with Star Sports next week, they sponsor the three day meeting at Brighton (still chance to get yourself a free ticket!) then we top the week off with the Shergar Cup at Ascot.
Thanks for reading this week, I hope some of you found a few winners.
