EURO 2024: Who Will Be on the Plane for England?
England manager Gareth Southgate recently named his preliminary training squad ahead of EURO 2024; a list of 33 names that will eventually be cut down to 26 in June.
Our football writer JOE CITRONE has taken a look through the list and judged each player’s chances of making the official squad and who might be sweating over their place…

THE EURO 2024 COUNTDOWN IS ON!
Jordan Pickford – Goalkeeper 🟢
Club: Everton
Caps: 60
Pickford’s place in the team is arguably one of the safest in the team. He has never let the side down when representing his country, and there is no other goalkeeper even remotely close to pushing him out of the side at the moment.

Aaron Ramsdale – Goalkeeper 🟢
Club: Arsenal
Caps: 4
Twelve months ago, I am sure Ramsdale would have been confident of not just making the squad, but also challenging Pickford for the number one spot. However, having been dropped for David Raya by Arsenal, he might be less sure now. That said, the lack of goalkeeping options makes him hard to drop.
Dean Henderson – Goalkeeper 🟢
Club: Crystal Palace
Caps: 1
It hasn’t been an ideal campaign for Henderson since signing for Crystal Palace. He suffered an early injury and it took some time for him to make his way back in, but Nick Pope’s injury means there is a spot to be filled and Henderson is the most likely candidate.
James Trafford – Goalkeeper 🔴
Club: Burnley
Caps: 0
I suspect Trafford is the most likely goalkeeper to be cut here. He was dropped by Vincent Komany for the last 10 games of Burnley’s season and it wouldn’t shock me if he’s already made holiday plans.
Kieran Trippier – Defender 🟠
Club: Newcastle United
Caps: 46
One of Southgate’s favourites, but injuries have made this a frustrating campaign for the Newcastle full-back. If he can regain full fitness, he should be there, but those injury doubts means he’s not on the plane yet.
John Stones – Defender 🟢
Club: Manchester City
Caps: 71
A season plagued by injuries but, when at his best, there are very few defenders in the world more composed and elegant than Stones. He hasn’t been starting regularly in recent weeks for Manchester City, but that is unlikely to stop Southgate from selecting the former Everton defender.
Jarrad Branthwaite – Defender 🟠
Club: Everton
Caps: 0
An excellent season for the ex-Carlisle United defender at the heart of Everton’s defence, helping the Toffees to another season of survival in the Premier League. He is still without a cap, though, so is at risk of being culled.
Lewis Dunk – Defender 🔴
Club: Brighton
Caps: 5
Brighton have been a great watch over the past couple of seasons, but defending hasn’t always been their forte, and so it’s a slight surprise to see Dunk included in this longlist. A solid player for sure, but international standard? I’m not so sure. I think he’ll likely miss out.
Joe Gomez – Defender 🟢
Club: Liverpool
Caps: 13
Offers excellent versatility across the backline and has had a really strong season with Liverpool. With England experiencing injury problems at left-back, he could slot in there at EURO 2024. I’d be pretty amazed if he misses out.
Harry Maguire – Defender 🟢
Club: Manchester United
Caps: 63
A lot has been said about this man over the past few years, but the narrative has started to turn this season as, amidst another pretty chaotic and disastrous campaign for Manchester United, Maguire has been one of their most consistent performers. Southgate likes and trusts him so I have little doubt he’ll be there in Germany.

Kyle Walker – Defender 🟢
Club: Manchester City
Caps: 82
A mainstay in every single one of Southgate’s squads, dating back to his first major tournament in 2018. Another strong campaign at right-back for Manchester City means Walker’s inclusion in the official squad is likely to be fairly straightforward.

Ezri Konsa – Defender 🟠
Club: Aston Villa
Caps: 2
As a result of Tyrone Mings’ serious injury early on in the campaign, Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa had to step up – and that he did – helping the Villains to a Champions League spot. Nice option to have.
Luke Shaw – Defender 🔴
Club: Manchester United
Caps: 31
Shaw would definitely be included usually, but Southgate has already said that it’s a ‘long shot’ that he will be included as he continues his recovery from injury. A real blow that leaves the left-back spot wide open.
Jarell Quansah – Defender 🔴
Club: Liverpool
Caps: 0
A surprise inclusion a year on from a fairly underwhelming loan spell with League One side Bristol Rovers. It’s been a breakthrough season for Quansah, though, and that’s been rewarded with a place in the training squad. However, it is hard to see him making the final list.
Marc Guehi – Defender 🟠
Club: Crystal Palace
Caps: 9
One of four members of the Crystal Palace side to be included in this training squad and has a decent chance of making it, although will Southgate include Guehi, Branthwaite AND Konsa? One of them may miss out. Guehi will be praying that it’s not him.
Trent Alexander-Arnold – Defender/Midfielder 🟢
Club: Liverpool
Caps: 23
Trent missed the last Euros with a thigh injury that he picked up in one of the warm-up friendlies and he’ll be looking to make up for lost time at EURO 2024. No question that he’ll be selected, possibly even starring in a midfield role this summer.
Conor Gallagher – Midfielder 🟢
Club: Liverpool
Caps: 23
Gallagher has enjoyed a good season with Chelsea despite a disappointing campaign for the Blues. He was a strong member of the last World Cup squad so I am pretty confident that he’ll be included again.
Jude Bellingham – Midfielder 🟢
Club: Real Madrid
Caps: 29
Bellingham is England’s big hope this summer. He has enjoyed a simply remarkable debut season with Spanish giants Real Madrid and will be hoping to take EURO 2024 by storm this summer. He will be in the squad and almost certainly starting every game.
Declan Rice – Midfielder 🟢
Club: Arsenal
Caps: 50
No question about this man’s inclusion. He has been such a transformative signing for Arsenal since arriving from West Ham last summer and very nearly helped them to the Premier League title. One of the first names on the teamsheet.
Curtis Jones – Midfielder 🟠
Club: Liverpool
Caps: 0
Jones has progressed nicely for Liverpool this season, beginning to become an important member of the Reds’ midfield, but he’s not completed a 90-minute match since picking up an ankle injury in February.
Adam Wharton – Midfielder 🔴
Club: Crystal Palace
Caps: 0
What a ride it’s been for Wharton since arriving in the Premier League from Blackburn Rovers in January. The impact he’s made at Crystal Palace over the last six months has been phenomenal and he has been rewarded with a place of in the training squad. However, seeing as he’s still uncapped and only spent a few months at the top level, he might suffer from being too inexperienced.
Kobbie Mainoo – Midfielder 🟢
Club: Manchester United
Caps: 2
It’s been a whirlwind season for Manchester United midfielder Mainoo who has become a pivotal part of the Red Devils midfield this season. His energy and skill would be useful for England this summer, and after his sensational FA Cup final performance, I expect to see him in there now.

James Maddison – Midfielder 🟠
Club: Tottenham Hotspur
Caps: 6
Maddison started this season absolutely superbly for Spurs, but his form faded away later in the campaign – not helped by injuries of course – which means he might now be sweating over his spot in this squad. He should be fine…but there’s emphasis on should.

Eberechi Eze – Forward 🟠
Club: Crystal Palace
Caps: 2
Eze has suffered a few injuries this season, and he only really managed to hit top gear in the final few weeks of the campaign under Oliver Glasner, but when he gets going…he really is a delight to watch. The sheer amount of attacking options Southgate has at disposal puts Eze’s place at risk, but he’d be a valuable member of the squad if he was picked.
Jack Grealish – Forward 🟠
Club: Manchester City
Caps: 35
It hasn’t been the best of seasons for Grealish, really, and his time at Manchester City might be coming to an end this summer with rumours of a move to Bayern Munich cropping up in recent days. He’s been a mainstay in the squad over recent years, but if the likes of Marcus Rashford have been dropped for poor form…Grealish might be a bit nervous.
Jarrod Bowen – Forward 🟠
Club: West Ham
Caps: 7
Bowen has established himself as a very consistent Premier League performer over the last couple of years and also become an indispensable member of the West Ham United squad. Just like Eze though, the amount of options means he won’t be certain of a place.
Anthony Gordon – Forward 🟢
Club: Newcastle United
Caps: 2
The price tag for Gordon’s transfer from Everton to Newcastle was massively questioned last year, but he’s answered those critics with an excellent 23/24 season. He’s also spoke of his passion and desire to play for the Three Lions which should work in his favour – I think he’ll go.
Bukayo Saka – Forward 🟢
Club: Arsenal
Caps: 32
Saka may still be feeling a bit of a hangover from Arsenal narrowly missing out on the Premier League title, but he’ll need to get over that quickly as he’ll be one of England’s most pivotal attacking players this summer.
Phil Foden – Forward 🟢
Club: Manchester City
Caps: 33
There’s a lot of debate about where exactly Foden fits into the starting XI, whether that be off the wing or through the middle, but there is no debate at all about whether he should be included in the final squad. Hopefully a big summer ahead for the Manchester City maestro.
Harry Kane – Forward 🟢
Club: Bayern Munich
Caps: 89
I mean…it’s Kane. Of course he’s going. And he’ll be going off the back of an extraordinary debut season with Bayern Munich where he scored 36 goals in 32 Bundesliga appearances this term.

Ivan Toney – Forward 🔴
Club: Brentford
Caps: 2
It’s been a difficult season for Toney who hasn’t been able to regain his best form since returning from his ban. He’s clearly a talented player, but I’m not sure he’s been good enough in recent weeks to warrant a place in Southgate’s final squad.
Ollie Watkins – Forward 🟠
Club: Aston Villa
Caps: 11
Watkins has really managed to establish himself as a proper Premier League number nine this season, but there’s something that makes me feel that Southgate is not totally convinced. I think he’ll be there, he probably deserves it more than Toney, but he’s not *definitely* there yet.
⭐ STARSPORTS.BET EURO 2024 MARKETS ⭐
Cole Palmer – Forward 🟢
Club: Chelsea
Caps: 2
It has been an absolutely sensational breakthrough season for Palmer with Chelsea this season and, as a reward for his fine form this season, I expect to see him included in Southgate’s final EURO 2024 squad. He might have a big part to play, too.
